India Urges Citizens to Leave Pakistan Immediately as Tensions Explode Over Kashmir Attack
April 24, 2025
In a sharp escalation of diplomatic conflict, India has advised all its citizens to leave Pakistan "at the earliest" following a deadly terrorist attack in the disputed region of Kashmir. The advisory comes as both nuclear-armed nations exchange sanctions and accusations, further destabilizing South Asia.
Mass Casualty Attack in Kashmir Sparks Crisis
The incident that triggered the crisis took place in Pahalgam, a tourist town in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where gunmen opened fire on a group of visitors, killing at least 26 and injuring 17. The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility, accusing the victims of illegal settlement.
India Responds with Travel Ban and Visa Revocations
India’s Ministry of External Affairs immediately suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals and invalidated existing visas. Indian travelers were urged to avoid Pakistan, and those currently in the country were told to return as soon as possible.
Indus Waters Treaty Suspended
India also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a landmark water-sharing agreement signed in 1960. The treaty, vital to both countries’ agriculture, has weathered wars and conflicts but now faces its most serious threat. Pakistan called the move an "act of war."
Pakistan Retaliates
In response, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian aircraft, suspended trade, and canceled all visa exemptions for Indian nationals. Islamabad also demanded a reduction in Indian diplomatic presence and ordered Indian military advisers to leave the country by April 30.
Who’s Behind the Attack?
Indian intelligence identified suspects Asif Shaikh, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha as TRF operatives involved in the attack. A nationwide manhunt is underway, with the Indian Army leading the search across the region.
Global Concern Over Escalation
With tensions reaching critical levels, analysts fear a potential military clash if cooler diplomatic heads don’t prevail. The international community has called for immediate de-escalation and renewed dialogue to prevent further instability in the region.
