New Zealand Ends Paper Applications for Many Visitor and Transit Visas
October 5, 2026
New Zealand has moved a major group of visitor and transit visa applications fully online, ending the acceptance of paper applications for selected visa categories from October 1, 2026.
The change is part of Immigration New Zealand's continuing move toward digital visa processing. For travellers and other applicants, the practical message is straightforward: if their visa falls within the affected categories, a new application must now be submitted through Immigration New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online system.
What Changed on October 1?
Immigration New Zealand announced that from October 1, applications for a selected group of visitor and transit visas would no longer be accepted on paper.
The affected categories include the Transit Visa and a broad range of visitor visas, including the standard Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, Group Visitor Visa, Academic Visitor Visa, Guardian Visitor Visa, Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa and several specialised visitor categories.
Applications already submitted on paper before October 1 are not being cancelled simply because of the new rule. Immigration New Zealand says those applications will continue to be processed normally.
Why New Zealand Is Going Online
The change reflects a broader digitalisation of New Zealand's immigration system. Immigration New Zealand says most visitor visa and all transit visa applications can already be submitted online.
The agency says moving applications into the enhanced Immigration Online system should make it easier for customers to apply and track their applications while helping immigration authorities operate a more efficient processing system.
The transition is therefore not simply a technical change. It represents a broader shift away from traditional paper-based immigration administration and toward a digital application process.
Travellers Should Check Before Applying
The change is particularly relevant for people planning trips to New Zealand during the country's busy travel period. Immigration New Zealand advises visitors to apply early because processing demand is typically higher between September and March.
Applicants should first determine whether they actually need a visa. Citizens of visa-waiver countries may instead need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, or NZeTA, depending on their circumstances. Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport generally do not need a Visitor Visa or NZeTA.
For those who do require a visa, the correct application category remains important. Submitting an application through the wrong channel or failing to provide required information can create unnecessary delays.
A Wider Digital Shift
New Zealand's move is part of a wider international trend in which governments are replacing paper immigration procedures with online platforms.
For travellers, digital applications can offer advantages such as electronic document submission, online payment and the ability to monitor the progress of an application. At the same time, applicants who are less familiar with online systems may need additional preparation before starting the process.
The October 1 change therefore marks an important practical step for anyone planning to visit or transit through New Zealand. The safest approach is to check the current requirements on the Immigration New Zealand website before preparing an application, particularly because visa categories and application procedures can change.
For many travellers, the era of printing and mailing a visitor visa application to New Zealand has now come to an end. The application process is increasingly digital, and for the affected visa categories, online submission is now the required route.
