ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND — A heartbreaking scene has unfolded in the Swiss Alps near the renowned resort town of Zermatt, where five skiers were discovered dead over the weekend close to the summit of Rimpfischhorn.

A Grim Discovery in the Mountains

The alarm was raised when climbers ascending from the Britannia Hut spotted four pairs of abandoned skis near the 4,199-meter Rimpfischhorn. Their report prompted a swift response from Air Zermatt, who deployed a rescue helicopter to the site.

Tragically, the mission quickly shifted from rescue to recovery. Three bodies were found on an avalanche cone—an accumulation of snow and debris likely caused by a recent snow slip. Two more bodies were later discovered roughly 200 meters higher on a snow-covered ledge.

There, two climbers became stranded due to strong winds and dense fog. A first rescue attempt failed, but a second mission succeeded after six tense hours.

This tragedy comes only four weeks after heavy snowfall led to multiple avalanches and road closures across the Zermatt region, briefly isolating the village. These recent events highlight the persistent risks facing adventurers in Switzerland's high alpine zones.
