In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on May 10, 2025, that India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire" after a period of heightened military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The announcement came after overnight negotiations mediated by the United States.

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social. "Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence."

Background of the Conflict

Tensions escalated following a terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 27 people, including 25 Hindu tourists. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be linked to the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility. India accused Pakistan of supporting the attack, an allegation Islamabad denied.

In response, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Pakistan's Punjab province. The operation involved missile strikes using Rafale jets equipped with SCALP missiles and AASM Hammer bombs. Pakistan retaliated with "Operation Bunyan al-Marsous," leading to significant casualties on both sides.

International Mediation Efforts

The United States played a pivotal role in mediating the ceasefire. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in regular talks with Indian and Pakistani officials, emphasizing the need for direct communication to prevent further miscalculations. The Group of Seven (G7) nations also urged both countries to engage in direct talks, condemning the recent violence and calling for de-escalation.

Current Situation and Outlook

Despite the ceasefire announcement, military postures remain heightened. India has mobilized reserve troops, and Pakistan has closed its airspace. Analysts warn that while the ceasefire is a positive step, the situation remains fluid, and continued diplomatic engagement is essential to ensure lasting stability in the region.
