The 2018 Knife Wound Sends Brazil’s Ex-President Back to the Hospital
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized once again due to severe abdominal pain linked to the life-threatening stabbing he suffered during the 2018 presidential campaign.
In a recent statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the 70-year-old politician revealed that doctors found a complication in his small intestine, likely caused by the multiple surgeries he underwent following the stabbing. Bolsonaro mentioned a strong possibility of being transferred to Brasília for further treatment, which may include another surgery.
Bolsonaro is currently reported to be in stable condition and without fever. He thanked the medical team and the Brazilian people for their ongoing support, saying, “Thank you for your prayers, messages, and displays of affection.”
His son, Carlos Bolsonaro, explained that the former leader was initially treated in Santa Cruz for abdominal adhesions. After being sedated for tests, he was flown to a better-equipped hospital in Natal, capital of the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte.
Since the 2018 attack, Bolsonaro has faced a series of health complications. He underwent colostomy reversal surgery in 2019, suffered from an intestinal blockage in 2022, and was admitted to a hospital in Florida in 2023 for abdominal discomfort.
In addition to his ongoing health issues, Bolsonaro is also under legal pressure. The Brazilian Supreme Court recently ruled that he must stand trial over allegations of plotting to overturn the 2022 presidential election, which he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has denied all accusations.
The former president’s condition and legal battles continue to draw significant attention in Brazil and internationally.
