Zidane Faces Italy Again as France Prepares for a Nations League Reunion 20 Years in the Making
Twenty years after one of the most famous moments in World Cup history, Zinedine Zidane will face Italy again on Friday, this time from the technical area rather than the pitch.
France hosts Italy at the Stade de France in a Nations League encounter that carries an unusual historical backdrop. Zidane is now the coach of the French national team, while Roberto Mancini has returned to lead Italy.
The match will also be Zidane's first home game as France coach.
From Berlin to Paris
The date inevitably brings memories of the 2006 World Cup final in Berlin.
Zidane was sent off during extra time after headbutting Italy defender Marco Materazzi. Italy eventually won the World Cup on penalties, while Zidane's international career ended in one of football's most recognisable scenes.
Two decades later, the circumstances are completely different.
Zidane is now responsible for building a new France team, and the former Real Madrid and France star has already made a strong start in the Nations League.
France won its opening two matches 1-0, against Turkey and Belgium. The results gave Zidane a perfect start, although the narrow margins have also highlighted how closely contested the matches have been.
France Without Mbappe
France will enter the match without Kylian Mbappe, who is unavailable because of injury.
That removes one of the team's most important attacking players and gives Zidane another opportunity to test the depth of his squad.
The French coach has already indicated that he wants his team to develop its own identity rather than rely exclusively on individual talent.
Playing Italy at home represents a significant test of that approach.
Mancini's Second Italy Era
Italy also arrives with a coach carrying considerable history.
Roberto Mancini returned to the Italian national team this year after previously leading the Azzurri to the European Championship title in 2021.
His new team is still undergoing reconstruction. Italy lost to Belgium before responding with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Turkey.
The result in Turkey offered encouragement after a difficult start and demonstrated the attacking potential of Mancini's younger squad.
Italy defender Giorgio Scalvini said the team is still working toward a clear identity under the returning coach. Mancini has placed significant emphasis on youth while attempting to build a side capable of controlling matches.
A Match With Two Stories
Friday's game therefore combines two separate narratives.
For Zidane, it is another step in the construction of his France team and his first major home test. For Italy, it is another opportunity to measure the progress of Mancini's rebuilding project.
The historical connection between Zidane and Italy adds an extra layer, but the match itself will ultimately be decided by the football played in Paris rather than events from 2006.
Twenty years after Berlin, Zidane and Italy meet again. This time, however, the French legend will be trying to shape the outcome from the sidelines.
