Eight months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, Adidas has officially unveiled Trionda, a connected ball designed to assist referees and enhance match accuracy. Presented in New York, this technological marvel marks a new era in football innovation, blending design, precision, and digital intelligence like never before.

Three Nations, One Ball

The name “Trionda” comes from the fusion of the words “Tri” and “Onda” — meaning “three waves.” It symbolizes the unity and shared energy of the three host countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each nation is represented in the ball’s colorful design — blue stars for the U.S., a red maple leaf for Canada, and a green eagle motif for Mexico. The dynamic patterns evoke the excitement and rhythm of the fans’ “olas” that will soon sweep across North American stadiums.

A Technological Leap in Football

Adidas calls Trionda “the most advanced football ever created.” Inside its innovative design lies a sophisticated Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a tiny 16-gram module packed with sensors including gyroscopes and accelerometers. This hidden chip can record over 500 data points per second — tracking speed, rotation, position, and point of impact — and send them instantly to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The goal? To reduce the pressure on referees and eliminate human error in critical moments. “We wanted to give referees a tool that makes their job easier, faster, and more precise,” explained Hannes Schaefke, Director of Football Innovation at Adidas.

Accuracy, Fairness, and Speed

The Trionda system enables referees to identify the exact moment a ball is struck, detect subtle handballs, and verify offside positions with millisecond precision. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a similar prototype helped VAR decisions become 70% faster. The 2026 version takes this even further — promising smoother matches and fewer interruptions, while maintaining the natural rhythm of the game.

Balanced Design and Perfect Flight

Beyond technology, Adidas engineers ensured that Trionda’s performance on the pitch remains flawless. To offset the weight of the embedded chip, counterweights were strategically placed within the panels, keeping the ball’s flight stable and its feel identical to traditional models. The new structure abandons the classic hexagonal panels in favor of three interlocking shapes, designed for improved aerodynamics and balance.

Even under varying conditions — from Mexico’s dry stadiums to Canada’s humid arenas — Trionda’s performance remains consistent. The ball’s deep seams and 3D texture enhance grip and control in all weather scenarios.

Charging and Connectivity

The integrated battery recharges wirelessly, using small charging docks placed along the sidelines of official stadiums. Once powered, the ball automatically syncs with the stadium’s tracking system, sending live updates directly to match officials in real time. Despite the advanced tech, Trionda remains just as durable and weather-resistant as any elite professional football.

More Than Just a Ball

Adidas envisions Trionda as more than a referee’s aid — it’s a glimpse into football’s digital future. The ability to track touches, analyze dribble speed, or measure shot impact opens the door to new analytics for coaches, broadcasters, and fans. “The ball was the last frontier in data tracking,” Schaefke added. “With Trionda, we’re entering a new dimension of understanding performance.”

Available to Fans — Without the Chip

Adidas will make a retail version of Trionda available for fans at around €160, though without the integrated sensor. So while you won’t be able to check offside decisions in your backyard, you can still experience the same ball that will roll across the world’s biggest stage from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

Trionda 2026 isn’t just a ball — it’s a revolution in motion. By merging precision, technology, and passion, it promises to make the next FIFA World Cup not only fairer, but smarter than ever before.
