One of the wives of Manchester synagogue attacker Jihad al-Shamie has come forward to say that although he was “intimidating, aggressive and controlling,” she never saw clear indications that he was radicalized before launching his deadly antisemitic assault.

Domestic Turbulence, No Radical Clues

The woman, who married al-Shamie in an Islamic ceremony in 2021, recalled that he often appeared fixated on Arabic news channels—“glued to his phone,” she said—but never spoke of extremism or violent ideology during their three years together. She now believes he “was living a lie with his religion.”

“He never talked about terrorism,” she said. “I wouldn’t describe him as having the mindset of a terrorist—yet his controlling and manipulative behavior was real.”

She described a relationship marked by coercion: admonishments for drinking energy drinks, pressure to attend mosques, recite the Qur’an, pray together, and later, resistance to her attempts to exit the marriage. Despite this, she insisted he never seemed radicalized during their time together.

Complex Personal History, Hidden Life

Al-Shamie, a British citizen born in Syria, carried out a brutal attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester during Yom Kippur, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries. Although he called emergency services mid-attack to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State—as police later confirmed—he was not previously flagged by counterterror authorities.

At the time of the attack, he was on bail for an alleged rape—an investigation that was unresolved. It has also been revealed that he maintained Islamic marriages to multiple women across northern England simultaneously, and fathered children in at least one of those unions.

One wife, granted anonymity, recalled that al-Shamie lived a double life. They met via the Muslim dating app Muzmatch (now Muzz) in late 2021 and married shortly thereafter. He was said to use various online aliases—one even referencing a comic-book villain—and maintained interests in anime, workouts, football, mosque attendance, and religious lectures. Notably, he abstained from alcohol or drugs.

Over time, he became abusive: according to the interview, he repeatedly raped her, though she did not approach the police until after the synagogue massacre. Text messages released to the press show his refusal to grant her a divorce after she discovered his other partner and children. In one message he wrote, “I can do better … don’t need someone with your baggage.”

Motive Under Investigation

Although al-Shamie declared loyalty to ISIS during the attack, security services say he was not on their radar before the act. Counterterrorism police are now probing whether the Gaza war or other external geopolitical factors played a role.

Some observers suggest that personal anguish—or fear of exposure for his double life—may have driven the atrocity more than ideology. “Was he this terrorist all along or was he crying out for help?” the wife asked. “Maybe … because he’s playing too many people … or because he knew he was about to be found out.”

In the weeks leading up to the attack, police are known to have visited his family home in Prestwich in connection with safeguarding concerns. After that visit, he reportedly told neighbors that his wife had left and would not allow him to see their children.

Summary & Questions That Remain

  • The wife maintains that she saw no signs of ideological radicalization, despite emotional and physical abuse.
  • Al-Shamie’s act of pledging allegiance to ISIS during the attack is confirmed by law enforcement, yet he was unknown to counterterror units before the massacre.
  • His personal conduct—polygamy, secret relationships, criminal allegations—paints a picture of a fractured and duplicitous existence.
  • Whether personal despair, fear of exposure, geopolitical motivation, or a combination thereof precipitated his act remains under investigation.
