Kathmandu, September 9, 2025 – In a dramatic political shift, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned today, caving to mounting pressure from widespread anti-corruption protests led largely by the nation’s youth. The resignation comes in the wake of violent clashes that left at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured.

Social Media Ban Sparks Nationwide Fury

The unrest ignited after the government enforced a temporary shutdown of major social media platforms—Facebook, YouTube, X, and others—as part of a broader crackdown on misinformation. This move provoked outrage, especially among young activists who swiftly moved to alternative channels such as TikTok and Viber to organize mass protests.

In response to escalating unrest, the ban was lifted on September 9. Prime Minister Oli expressed regret over the casualties and pledged compensations and free medical care. An investigative panel was also announced to determine the root causes and prevent future outbreaks within 15 days.

Protests Escalate, Government Buildings Torched

Defying curfews, demonstrators surged onto the streets of Kathmandu and beyond, setting fire to government offices, including the sprawling Singha Durbar complex that houses the parliament and prime minister’s residence. Protesters stormed the parliament and vandalized political leaders’ homes, inciting an already volatile political climate.

“Nearly 20 people were murdered by the state—that shows the scale of police brutality,” said Yujan Rajbhandari, a 23-year-old student protester.

Analysts view these events not as isolated acts of dissent, but as an emerging generational revolt against rampant corruption, nepotism, and lack of socioeconomic opportunities.

Political Fallout and Path Forward

Oli, who was sworn in for his fourth term in July 2024, characterized his resignation as a constitutional necessity to facilitate resolution of the crisis. His departure has triggered immediate political maneuvering as parties scramble to form a new government.

President Ram Chandra Paudel has already begun consultations to nominate a successor, while urging protest leaders to engage in dialogue. Both the army and international partners, including the U.S., have called for calm and restraint.

A Youth Movement with Broader Implications

The Gen Z-driven uprising has resonated nationwide. A surge of disillusionment, especially among those aged 15 to 40—who comprise nearly 43% of Nepal’s population—has underscored deep-seated frustration with institutional corruption and economic stagnation.

Observers note that this movement could mark a crucial turning point in Nepali politics, signaling a youth hunger for accountability and transformational leadership. Kathmandu’s mayor, Balendra Shah—a former rapper turned political influencer—has emerged as a popular voice for a new generation of governance.
