A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sand Point, Alaska, on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami advisory that briefly caused alarm across coastal communities on the Pacific edge of the state.

A Sudden Jolt in the Aleutians

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred approximately 54 miles south of Sand Point, located on Popof Island about 600 miles southwest of Anchorage. The quake's shallow depth amplified its shaking intensity.

Tsunami Alert Issued and Updated

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an initial tsunami warning covering Unimak Pass to Kennedy Entrance. This warning was later downgraded to an advisory as risk levels were reassessed. Communities included in the alert zone were Kodiak, Cold Bay, and Sand Point itself.

Kodiak Responds with Sirens

In Kodiak, local emergency systems were activated. Police confirmed that tsunami sirens were sounded, urging residents to move to elevated areas. Estimated wave arrival was projected for 2:40 p.m., though no tsunami-related damage has been reported so far.

Firsthand Accounts from Cold Bay

Michael Ashley of Cold Bay Lodge told reporters he was outdoors when he felt shaking, but described it as “not very intense.” Despite Cold Bay being under advisory, Ashley noted that the town sits 100 feet above sea level and residents were generally unconcerned. “Big quakes like this aren’t unusual in the summer,” he added.

Alaska: Earthquake Country

Alaska lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone prone to earthquakes due to tectonic plate movements. The region regularly experiences moderate to strong quakes, including a 7.8-magnitude event in 2020 near the same area.

Monitoring Continues

Authorities are continuing to monitor for aftershocks and possible changes in sea levels. Residents are urged to stay tuned to official channels and avoid coastal areas during the advisory period. The National Tsunami Warning Center will issue updates as necessary.
