June 02 , 2025
San Antonio, Texas – Beloved actor and voice talent Jonathan Joss, known for his iconic role as John Redcorn in the animated series King of the Hill, has died at age 59 following a tragic shooting incident in Texas.
Authorities confirm that Joss was fatally shot during a dispute with a neighbor over the weekend. According to local reports, San Antonio police arrived at the scene after receiving calls about gunfire. Joss was found near the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, has been arrested and charged with murder. Investigations are ongoing.
Joss’s death comes at a pivotal time, as he had recently recorded lines for the upcoming reboot of King of the Hill, scheduled to premiere on Hulu in August. Joss had voiced John Redcorn from season two through thirteen, taking over the role after the original actor, Victor Aaron, passed away in 1996.
In addition to his role in King of the Hill, Joss was widely recognized for playing Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation. His credits also include roles in Tulsa King, Ray Donovan, True Grit, and The Magnificent Seven. He was praised for his authentic portrayal of Native American characters, bringing nuance and representation to mainstream television.
Just hours before the fatal incident, Joss had been in Austin for a fan event titled The Redcorn Experience, where he interacted with fans through live music, storytelling, and Q&A sessions. On May 25, he posted enthusiastically on Facebook: “We’re bringing stories, laughs, music, and that unmistakable Redcorn energy to the heart of Texas for one unforgettable night.”
Following the event, Joss posted again asking for a ride back to San Antonio, writing, “Last night’s gig was amazing… We’re feeling so grateful for the support and good vibes.” His final public message, posted just hours before the shooting, read: “Our ride will arrive in a few hours… we are grabbing some food and feeling thankful for the support.”
Earlier this year, Joss experienced a personal tragedy when a fire destroyed his childhood home in San Antonio. According to a GoFundMe created in his name, the fire consumed not only cherished memories and possessions, but also claimed the lives of three of his dogs. “This wasn't just any home—it was the house his father built for his mother in 1957,” the campaign stated.
Fans and fellow actors have expressed deep grief and shock at Joss’s passing. “They took my brother away from me, man… Jonathan Joss aka John Redcorn… I love you, brother, until I see you again,” wrote one admirer on X (formerly Twitter). Another noted, “John Redcorn was the only contemporary Native representation I had in comedy growing up… RIP to one of the best to ever do it.”
Jonathan Joss is survived by his husband, Tristan, and leaves behind a powerful legacy of artistic talent, cultural representation, and fan appreciation.
Rest in peace, Jonathan Joss. Your voice, presence, and spirit will be deeply missed.
