A devastating tragedy struck the Dominican Republic early Tuesday morning when the roof of the popular Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed during a live merengue concert. According to local authorities, at least 58 people lost their lives and more than 160 others were injured in one of the deadliest nightclub disasters in the country's history.

The incident occurred while a high-profile crowd, including politicians, celebrities, and renowned athletes, gathered for the late-night performance. Among the casualties was Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province and sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz. She reportedly contacted President Luis Abinader moments after the collapse, but sadly died later at the hospital.

Emergency responders, led by Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, have been working around the clock to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble. “We believe people are still alive under the debris,” Méndez affirmed. “We will not rest until everyone is accounted for.”

Rescue crews have been using concrete saws and manual tools to lift debris and reach trapped victims. The chaotic scene was filled with dust, sirens, and cries from distressed families awaiting news.

The popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing during the event, sustained injuries. His manager described the terrifying moment when the roof came crashing down around midnight, killing the group’s saxophonist. “It felt like an earthquake,” he said.

Initial reports claimed that MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel had died, but later updates confirmed he was rescued and is recovering in the hospital.

While the exact cause of the structural failure remains under investigation, Jet Set nightclub issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and pledged full cooperation with authorities. “The loss of life has left us heartbroken,” the statement read.

President Abinader visited the site, offering comfort to grieving families and reaffirming the government’s commitment to rescue and recovery efforts. "We are doing everything in our power to save lives,” he stated.

As the Dominican Republic mourns, investigations continue to determine how such a catastrophic event could happen in one of Santo Domingo’s most iconic venues.
