‘Thank You, Trump?’ Canadian MP Delivers Scathing Praise That Unites a Nation
April 2025
In a bold and unexpected statement, Canadian Member of Parliament Charlie Angus turned heads by delivering an ironic thank-you to U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking on the MeidasTouch podcast, Angus—soon to retire from federal politics—remarked that Trump, albeit unintentionally, helped unify Canada like never before.
“Donald Trump, I’m going to say this once—and I might never say it again—I want to thank you. I want to thank you for bringing Canada together,” Angus said during his appearance with host Ben Meiselas.
The New Democratic Party MP sharply criticized Trump, calling him a “malignant narcissistic slug,” and condemned his assault on values such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). “Your DEI nightmare? That’s who we are, Donald,” Angus added. “Canada will always be a country of diversity. We will always be a country of equity. We will always be a country of inclusion. And we will defend the rule of law.”
The MP’s comments echo a growing sentiment among Canadians rejecting Trump’s controversial suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. Many Canadians residing in the U.S. have reportedly returned home, preferring stability and democratic values to American political turmoil.
Prime Minister Mark Carney reinforced this national stance during a recent press conference. Speaking after Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day,” Carney stated, “Our once-deepening partnership on immigration and trade is over.” The Prime Minister also cited Trump’s tariffs and destabilizing economic policies as reasons for a shift in bilateral relations.
Trump, for his part, downplayed Canada’s importance in a recent statement aboard Air Force One, saying, “We don’t need energy from Canada. We don’t need lumber from Canada. We don’t need anything from Canada. I believe this will be the golden age of America.”
Despite his continued rhetoric, Trump may have achieved something unexpected—uniting Canadians across the political spectrum in defense of shared values. For that, Charlie Angus says, ironically, "Thank you.".
