Florida State University Shooting: 2 Killed, 5 Injured in Tragic Campus Attack
Tallahassee, Florida – Florida State University (FSU) is reeling after a tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of two individuals and left five others injured on Thursday. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old FSU student Phoenix Ikner, is currently hospitalized after being shot by law enforcement. None of the victims were students or police officers, according to local authorities.
Law enforcement officials say the suspect used a handgun previously owned by his mother, a deputy with the Leon County Sheriff's Office. The weapon, which she had legally retained after upgrading her service firearm, was found on Ikner at the scene. Additionally, a shotgun was discovered in the student union and another firearm was located in his car.
Campus on High Alert
The gunfire erupted near the student union, prompting university alerts and a massive emergency response. Students and faculty were instructed to shelter in place as multiple agencies responded to the chaotic scene. Videos posted online showed students evacuating while others sought cover inside buildings. By mid-afternoon, the campus was declared secure, but the area around the student union remains an active crime scene.
Response and Reactions
FSU President Richard McCullough expressed heartbreak at a press conference, describing it as a “tragic day” for the university. He praised the swift actions of law enforcement, which he said prevented further loss of life. “Our law enforcement officers are absolute heroes,” McCullough stated. “Their immediate response prevented this from being a bigger tragedy.”
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell confirmed that the suspect did not fire at officers but refused to comply with commands, prompting the use of force. He added that Ikner has exercised his right to remain silent and is not currently cooperating with investigators.
Family Ties and Access to Firearms
Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that Ikner had been involved in training programs with the sheriff's office. “It’s not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons,” McNeil said. “But it is tragic beyond words.”
Governor Ron DeSantis and other leaders have responded with condolences, and the Department of Justice confirmed its coordination with the FBI on the investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Police are urging anyone with information or footage to come forward as the investigation continues. All classes and university events have been canceled until further notice.
This tragic incident has reignited discussions on gun control and campus safety, with advocates like Fred Guttenberg—whose daughter was killed in the 2018 Parkland shooting—calling for urgent action.
