Cristiano Ronaldo Pays Tribute to Aurélio Pereira, Football Scout Who Discovered Him
Cristiano Ronaldo has led heartfelt tributes following the death of Aurélio Pereira, the legendary Portuguese football scout who passed away at age 77. Pereira, a key figure in the development of Portugal's football elite, famously discovered Ronaldo at the age of 12 while playing for Nacional.
Known affectionately as “The Formation”, Pereira played a pivotal role in shaping Portugal’s football history. He was instrumental in scouting and nurturing numerous stars, including Luís Figo, Ricardo Quaresma, Nani, and Paulo Futre. His influence extended to the Euro 2016-winning team, which featured 10 players discovered by him—earning them the nickname “The Aurélios.”
On social media, Ronaldo expressed his deep gratitude:
“One of the greatest icons of world coaching has left us, but his legacy will live on forever. I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and so many other players. Farewell, Mr. Aurélio, thank you for everything. Rest in peace.”
Pereira began his journey as a player for Sporting CP before returning as a coach. In 1988, he founded the club’s now-renowned youth recruitment and development department. In 2012, Sporting honored him by naming the main stadium of their academy after him.
His legacy was further recognized with the Medal of Sporting Merit in 2017 and the UEFA Order of Merit in 2018, celebrating his contribution to Portuguese and European football.
In a statement, Sporting CP said:
“He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest names in the history of Portuguese football and, above all, of Sporting Clube de Portugal. The club offers its deepest condolences to his family and friends, and pays tribute to his decades of passion, devotion, and glory carried with the Lion on his chest.”
Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, called Pereira’s death “an irreparable loss for Portuguese football.”
“More than a discoverer of talent, Aurélio was a kind and dignified man who believed in Portuguese potential. We owe him a debt of eternal gratitude and will continue to honor his legacy for generations to come.”
Aurélio Pereira’s lifelong dedication to football transformed the future of Portuguese sport. His vision and commitment will continue to inspire generations of players and coaches alike.
