A tragic plane crash off the Caribbean coast of Honduras has claimed 12 lives, including popular musician and politician Aurelio Martinez Suazo and two children. The jet, carrying 17 passengers, crashed into the sea just moments after taking off from Roatan Island on Monday around 6 PM.
A Fatal Journey Cut Short
The aircraft was en route to La Ceiba Airport on the Honduran mainland when disaster struck. According to the National Police, 12 people perished, while five survivors were rescued. Authorities are still working to recover the final body from the wreckage site.
Honduran President Xiomara Castro immediately activated the Emergency Operations Committee (COE), mobilizing national rescue teams, including the Armed Forces, Fire Department, COPECO, and the Red Cross, to assist with the tragedy.

Difficult Rescue Efforts Amid Zero Visibility
Fire Captain Franklin Borjas described the challenges of the rescue mission, noting that the crash site was surrounded by 98 feet of rocks, making access difficult. Divers working at the scene faced zero visibility, complicating recovery efforts.
International Passengers Among the Victims
The New York Times reported that in addition to the Honduran victims, the flight carried a U.S. national and a French national. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Civil Aeronautics Agency, with authorities working to determine what led to the deadly accident.
