In a high-stakes battle for third place, Canada edged out the USA 2-1, proving more clinical despite the Americans dominating possession.

Canada's Sharp Attack Secures the Win

Although the USMNT controlled 59.6% of possession, Canada posed a greater attacking threat, outshooting their rivals 8-5 and recording four shots on target to the USA’s two.

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi capitalized on a low cross from Ali Ahmed. After a tussle between Jonathan David and Mark McKenzie, the ball fell to Oluwaseyi, who struck past Matt Turner from close range.

The USA responded swiftly. In the 35th minute, Tim Weah dribbled past defenders on the left wing before finding Diego Luna inside the box. Luna’s clever cutback pulled the Canadian defense out of position, allowing Patrick Agyemang to fire a right-footed shot that deflected off Dayne St. Clair and into the net.

Jonathan David Seals the Victory

Canada reclaimed the lead in the 59th minute thanks to Jonathan David. A poor clearance from Tim Weah landed at the feet of Ali Ahmed, who fed David inside the box. The Lille striker took a touch past McKenzie and, with Cameron Carter-Vickers sliding in to block, curled a left-footed shot past Turner and into the far corner.

Despite late attempts from the USA, including a near-miss from Arfsten and White struggling to connect on a corner, Canada held firm to secure the bronze medal.

Mixed History for USMNT in Bronze Medal Matches

This was the USMNT’s eighth bronze-medal match in history. The team successfully claimed third place in the 1992 and 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 1996 and 2003 Concacaf Gold Cup. However, they fell short in Copa América 1995 and 2016, as well as the 2015 Gold Cup.

The USA will regroup in June to prepare for the upcoming Gold Cup, their last major competition before next year’s World Cup. They will face Turkey on June 7 in East Hartford, Conn., and Switzerland on June 10 in Nashville before the Gold Cup kicks off on June 14.

For Canada, this victory marks another milestone in their rising football journey, solidifying their place as a growing force in North American soccer.
