Trump-Zelenskyy Clash: Tensions Rise as White House Meeting Ends in Chaos

The White House witnessed escalating tensions during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which was supposed to finalize a rare minerals deal and advance peace efforts in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

The confrontation began with heated exchanges, as Trump accused Zelenskyy of "disrespectful behavior" and declared that the Ukrainian leader was "not ready for peace if America is involved" because US involvement gave him "a big advantage in negotiations." Trump added, "He can come back when he is ready for peace."

During the talks, Trump warned Zelenskyy that he was "gambling with the lives of millions, with the third world war," urging him to stop demanding further security guarantees. He stated, "You're either going to make a deal, or we are out."

Positioning himself as a mediator, Trump drew a false equivalence between Ukraine and Russia, a stark contrast to Zelenskyy's view of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "killer" and "terrorist" who invaded Ukraine. Zelenskyy remained firm, refusing to compromise on Ukraine's territorial integrity.

The leaders repeatedly clashed over their views on Russia, negotiations, and the extent of European support for Ukraine.

Vice-President JD Vance further criticized Zelenskyy, accusing him of "not showing gratitude for US support" and instead "campaigning for the opposition in October."

Zelenskyy left the White House moments later, and the scheduled press conference to sign the minerals deal was canceled.

Later, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the US on social media, saying:

"Thank you, America. Thank you for your support, for this visit. Thank you to the President, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs a just and lasting peace, and we are working to achieve it."

The incident sparked international reactions, with European leaders voicing support for Zelenskyy. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called Trump's remarks "unreasonable" and reiterated unwavering backing for Ukraine.

This diplomatic fallout raises questions about the future of US-Ukraine relations and the trajectory of peace negotiations in the ongoing conflict.
