Following US Airstrikes in Yemen, Iran Warns of Alleged Surveillance Vessels in the Middle East

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran has issued a warning to the U.S. regarding two cargo ships, the Behshad and Saviz, suspected of serving as forward operating bases for Iranian commandos. This development follows U.S. and UK airstrikes in Yemen targeting militias backed by Iran. The strikes were in retaliation for attacks linked to Israel's conflict with Hamas, heightening concerns of a broader regional conflict.

The U.S. airstrikes targeted Houthi rebels across six provinces in Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, hitting underground missile arsenals, launch sites, and rebel helicopters. In response, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree reaffirmed their support for Palestinians and warned of continued resistance against the aggressors.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cautioned the Houthis, emphasizing the consequences if they persist with attacks on international shipping and naval vessels. President Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, echoed this sentiment, asserting the preparedness to confront any threats faced by American forces.

The Behshad and Saviz, registered as commercial cargo ships, have long raised suspicions about their role as spy positions for Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned the Tehran-based company associated with these vessels. The Saviz, previously described by Saudi Arabia as a maritime base for the Guard, was targeted in 2021, allegedly by Israel, amid a broader conflict following the collapse of the Iran nuclear deal.

The video statement released by Iran's regular army referred to the vessels as "floating armories," with the Behshad purportedly involved in countering piracy in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. However, Iran's involvement in anti-piracy efforts in the region remains publicly unconfirmed.

The statement concluded with a warning about the repercussions of engaging in terrorist activities against the Behshad or similar vessels, stressing the potential global risks to international maritime routes and security.
